Having to make this week's newsletter a short one.  Life got in my way this week, and we are on the last day of my husband being gone for 16 of the last 20 days.  (I'm about ready to pull my hair out and completely stressed with the disarray in every direction I look.)

Basil Shrimp Pasta


Macaroni Menu

Serves 6   Time: 20 minutes

Ingredients:
8 oz box of your favorite pasta… I used thin spaghetti. Angel hair would be great too!
1-1/2 cups of cherry tomatoes, halved
3 teaspoons olive oil
1-1/2 lb fresh medium shrimp, peeled, dev-eined and tails removed
3 cloves garlic, finely chopped
1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
1/4 cup reduced-sodium chicken broth
1/4 teaspoon of Kosher salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper
3 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
2 tablespoons butter
3 tablespoons chopped basil
 
1. Cook pasta as directed ...

I saw this awesome idea on Pinterest and it inspired me to try my own take on it! My kids love it and it was so easy and fun to make! 

Supplies:  
Hair gel (cheap stuff from the a dollar store)
Glitter
Duct tape
Cardboard
Clear plastic bag


Step 1: Measure approximately 5-6 ounces of hair gel and mix in as much glitter as you want!


Step 2: Pour mixture into a clear food storage bag and get as much air out as possible and seal bag.

Take A Colorful Nature Walk


Macaroni Fun

Make your next walk a hunt for specific colors (try this any time of the year). This is an easy project that can be made very simple as your time/ materials/ patience demands.

You’ll need:
  • An empty egg carton
  • Paints and paintbrushes
Paint the inside of an egg carton different colors. Encourage the children to mix colors together or add black or white to create different hues. 

Want it less messy? Use markers or crayons.

Numerous hands-on activities include carding wool, weaving, and playing pioneer games with the “Spinster on the Green.” Children will also have an opportunity to engage in imaginary play when they visit a pioneer camp and a 1800s school house.

Saturday, May 18 - Angelman Walk

The Angelman Syndrome Foundation Walk has been an essential source of funding for the Angelman Syndrome Foundation since its start in 1999. What began as a single volunteer walk site, now includes 30 walks across the country and is recognized as the top fundraising event for the organization. Through education, information, research, advocacy and support, your participation in the National Walk helps all of us at ASF take strides toward improving the lives of those impacted by AS. With your help, we are moving closer to powerful treatments and an eventual cure for Angelman syndrome. We are continually grateful for the support that we receive year after year.

Build It! Architecture for Kids. This exhibit, on loan from archKIDecture in Chicago, provides hands-on opportunities for children to explore architecture and construction.

The exhibit consists of 9 modules presenting architectural subjects including roofs, tools, & shapes. The exhibit promotes visual literacy through activities on shapes, color, and symmetries. Brightly colored, child-sized modules explore math concepts through activities on tessellations, ornament design, symmetry, scale, proportion, and composition. Children will explore familiar geometric shapes to better understand the properties of materials and structures.

Saturday, May 18 - KAYAK RIVER TRIP

Join us for a 7.1-mile trip down the scenic Little Miami River, beginning at Lake Isabella and ending at Jim Terrell Park in Milford. Pack some sunscreen and a lunch as we enjoy the sights and sounds of the river. All equipment is provided, as well as transportation back to Lake Isabella.

A Kayak Quick Start session is a prerequisite for this trip.

A certified archery instructor teaches the basics of shooting a compound bow on our outdoor range and then lets you test your skills with target practice. Archers must be able to pull a minimum of 10 pounds draw weight and use the equipment provided.

Monday, May 27 - Freestore Foodbank's Hunger Walk

4,200 walkers and runners join in on Memorial Day for the 10th Annual Hunger Walk. The event raises more than $230,000. Your support is helping the more than 315 member agencies working with the Freestore Foodbank to serve our neighbors in need across 20 counties in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana. All of the money raised from Hunger Walk is used toward the agencies’ food distribution costs.

Workshops teach children do-it-yourself skills, tool safety and instill a sense of pride and accomplishment.  All kids get to keep their craft and receive a FREE Kids Workshop Apron, commemorative pin and certificate of achievement.  Paint will be provided at the workshop for children to personalize their lawn mower pencil holder craft!  Makes a great gift for Father's Day or other holiday!

Saturday, June 1 - HAMILTON COUNTY CELEBRATES RESIDENTS WITH APPRECIATION DAYS

As a special thank you to all Hamilton County residents for their continued support of the parks, we are hosting Free Firsts Resident Appreciation Days on the first day of every month this summer: May 1, June 1, July 1 and August 1, 2013.

On Free Firsts Appreciation Days, county residents can enjoy free entry into any Hamilton County park without the need for a Motor Vehicle Permit. Special activities will also be offered, like free tour boat rides, free fishing, free rounds of miniature golf, discounts at Nature’s Niche stores, as well as free nature programs.
